Federal Government Decongests Correctional Centers, Releases Inmates with Minor Fines

The Federal Government through the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced the pardon of over 4,000 inmates from correctional facilities as part of its decongestion efforts, saving N1 billion in feeding costs.
Speaking at the 5th Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja, he explained that many detainees had been jailed for minor fines, prompting their release. Additionally, he reported that the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad destroyed over 2,125 illegal refineries, impounded nearly 205 trucks carrying illicit petroleum products, arrested over 700 suspects, secured 345 convictions, and has 187 cases still pending in court.
