Federal Government Begins Bamboo Factory in Kogi to Curb Deforestation

The Federal Government has begun developing a bamboo processing factory in Kogi State to provide alternatives to deforestation and promote sustainable forest use. Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, made this known during a ministerial briefing in Abuja, explaining that bamboo serves as a viable substitute for wood, especially as cooking fuel. Lawal added that feasibility studies are ongoing for similar factories in seven other states. He also highlighted efforts by the Great Green Wall Agency in afforestation, skill acquisition, and the distribution of solar energy systems and improved cooking stoves to fight desert encroachment and forest degradation in 11 northern states.
