Federal Government Allocates N4 Billion for Conditional Cash Transfers to Vulnerable Households

The federal government has allocated N4 billion for conditional cash transfers aimed at supporting vulnerable households across Nigeria. This initiative was announced during the launch of the 2025 Nigeria Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) at the United Nations House in Abuja on Thursday. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwada, highlighted the program’s goal of addressing the nation’s escalating humanitarian issues, with a particular focus on helping at least 10 million displaced households.
The cash transfers will be distributed between February and April, specifically targeting families impacted by displacement, especially in the Northeast. The initiative prioritizes the most vulnerable members of society, with an emphasis on women, particularly widows, pregnant women, and those living with disabilities. Professor Yilwada emphasized the challenges faced by displaced women, noting the government’s commitment to providing targeted support for these vulnerable groups.
In addition to the cash transfers, the government has approved N2 billion in interest-free loans for farmers in rural communities to boost food production and promote self-sufficiency. These loans, which will range from N300,000 to N400,000 per household, are designed to help farmers access necessary resources and connect them to market opportunities. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to alleviate poverty and support economic development in rural areas.
Professor Yilwada also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to addressing the needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and affected communities nationwide. The HNRP, which was developed through extensive consultations, is focused on delivering humanitarian aid to conflict-affected regions such as Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe. The program aims to combine efforts from humanitarian, developmental, and peacebuilding platforms to create long-term resilience and sustainable solutions for these communities.
