Federal Government Affirms Commitment to Uninterrupted Academic Calendar
President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian university staff to prioritize peace and engage in constructive negotiations with his administration.
Speaking at the University of Ilorin’s 39th Convocation, represented by Minister of State for Education Dr. Yusuf Sununu, president Tinubu emphasized the importance of maintaining open universities for uninterrupted academic sessions.
He expressed a commitment to preventing the closure of institutions over issues that can be resolved through dialogue, highlighting that such closures only hinder educational progress.
Furthermore, Dr. Yusuf Sununu reiterated the government’s dedication to an uninterrupted academic calendar and announced measures to fulfill agreements with university staff, including the payment of previously withheld salaries and noted that the federal government has initiated a new payment structure, removing salaries from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System in response to trade unions’ requests.
These actions aim to foster better relationships between the government and universities, ensuring a collaborative approach moving forward.
In addition to addressing salary issues, the administration has introduced student loan schemes to assist those affected by the current economic situation. Tinubu called on students to take advantage of these loans and participate actively in addressing the nation’s economic and security challenges. He emphasized the role of young people in shaping the future of Nigeria, urging graduates to contribute positively to society.
The Pro-Chancellor of the University, Abiodun Aluko, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to enhancing the institution’s academic excellence and research capabilities. He outlined plans to mobilize resources for the university’s growth and to maintain a peaceful campus environment. The convocation ceremony saw 12,042 graduates receive certificates, including 256 First Class and 3,842 Second Class graduates, reflecting the institution’s commitment to producing competent and globally competitive professionals.
