Federal Court Lowers Bail to N5 Million for #EndBadGovernance Protesters
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted a bail variation on Monday for five #EndBadGovernance protesters, reducing their bail amount to N5 million each.
Marshall Abubakar, the counsel for three of the defendants, noted that some protesters faced challenges in finding sureties who met the court’s requirements.
Following appeals from the defense lawyers regarding the strict bail terms, Justice Nwite agreed to modify the conditions for the five defendants unable to fulfill the initial requirements.
The new bail arrangement stipulates that each of the five protesters will be required to provide N5 million bail with one surety, who must be a close relative, such as a parent or another blood relative residing within the jurisdiction.
The ten defendants—Michael Adaramoye, Adeyemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Comrade Opaluwa Simon, Angel Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nurudeen Khamis, and Abduldalam Zubair—are facing serious charges, including treason and conspiracy to commit a felony.
They are accused of attempting to force their way into a government building, setting fire to a police station, injuring officers, and inciting public unrest against the government, all of which fall under the penal code. The defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them by the Inspector General of Police.
