FCCPC raids Abuja market, seals shops over fake foreign rice brands

April 16, 2025

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) raided several shops in Abuja’s Utako Market, sealing stores allegedly involved in rebagging locally milled rice as imported brands such as Royal Stallion and Mama Gold, which have not been officially imported since 2015. Supported by security operatives, the operation followed intelligence from brand owners and revealed traders exploiting consumer preference for foreign rice by deceptively packaging local varieties as the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission warned that violators face penalties under consumer protection laws as investigations continue to trace the supply chain behind the counterfeit branding.
