Fatal Collision in Ibadan Leaves Six Dead, several Injured
At least six people have died and several others injured in a tragic accident on Monday at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko along Akanran Road in Ibadan.
According to a staff member of the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency (OYRTMA), the accident was caused by brake failure on the trailer as it descended a slope that lost control colliding with a tricycle, and another lorry carrying soft drinks, which was unable to avoid the trailer, also struck a second tricycle.
The incident involved a trailer transporting tiles and a lorry loaded with soft drinks, with a pupil among the injured who tragically lost her mother in the crash. Four injured individuals were taken to a nearby hospital, with two primary school children treated as outpatients, while two others with severe injuries were admitted for further care.
In addition to the two articulated vehicles and two tricycles involved, two other cars sustained damage in the multi-vehicle crash. Emergency responders confirmed that six people died, and five others sustained injuries, all of whom were promptly evacuated from the scene.
The accident resulted in significant traffic congestion, prompting passengers to alight and walk, while many parked their vehicles on the roadside, waiting for security operatives to clear the area. In addition to the two articulated vehicles and two tricycles involved, two other cars sustained damage in the multi-vehicle crash.
Sympathizers at the scene expressed their frustration, blaming the drivers—who had fled the scene—for the incident. They argued that the accident could have been mitigated if the driver of the trailer had swerved into a ditch rather than facing the oncoming tricycles. Security forces, including OYRTMA, police, road safety officials, and local vigilantes, were present to manage the situation.
