Farouk Lawan Released from Kuje Custodial Centre After Serving Sentence
Former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre after serving his prison sentence.
Adamu Duza, spokesman for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), confirmed his release, stating that Lawan has completed his time.
Lawan was convicted in 2021 for soliciting and accepting a bribe of $500,000 from businessman Femi Otedola, the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd. The case centered around allegations that Lawan demanded $3 million from Otedola to remove Zenon from a list of oil companies implicated in a significant petrol subsidy scandal.
During his tenure, Lawan represented the Bagwai/Shanono constituency in Kano State. His actions during the investigation into the subsidy scam raised serious ethical questions and led to his eventual conviction.
With his release, Lawan’s case remains a notable example in discussions about corruption and accountability in Nigeria, reflecting ongoing challenges within the political landscape.
