Ex – PDP Governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu Released from DSS Custody After Controversial Arrest
Ladi Adebutu, the former governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, has been released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Adebutu was arrested by the secret police on Monday evening over alleged disturbances related to the local government elections held on November 16, 2024, in which the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the contested seats. His detention sparked controversy, as it was widely viewed as an attempt to stifle opposition voices in the state.
On Tuesday, Adebutu confirmed his release in a statement, describing the allegations against him as unfounded and politically motivated as he emphasized that his arrest was part of a broader effort to silence his criticisms and political activities, particularly his stance on the fairness of the local government elections.
He hinted at revealing more details about the political situation in Ogun in the coming days, suggesting that the current administration’s actions over the past five years have fueled a sense of desperation to suppress opposition voices and weaken local governance.
He also addressed his concerns about the state of governance in Ogun, particularly the lack of financial autonomy for local governments, which he believes is essential for the state’s development. Adebutu pointed out that his views on the need for free and fair local elections align with national priorities, highlighting that President Bola Tinubu shares similar perspectives on the matter. However, he criticized the current administration in Ogun State for what he sees as an effort to undermine local government autonomy and suppress political dissent.
Adebutu vowed to continue his advocacy for a more transparent and accountable government, insisting that the struggle for local government financial autonomy is crucial for the development of Ogun State. He hinted at revealing more details about the political situation in Ogun in the coming days, suggesting that the current administration’s actions over the past five years have fueled a sense of desperation to suppress opposition voices and weaken local governance.
