Ex-Kwara Governor and Senator Cornelius Adebayo Dies at 84

June 25, 2025

Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, former governor of Kwara State, senator, and Minister of Communications, has died at the age of 84 in Abuja. Born in 1941 in Igbaja, he served as a senator in 1979 under the Unity Party of Nigeria and was briefly governor in 1983.

A committed pro-democracy activist, he played a key role in NADECO’s push for the recognition of the June 12, 1993 mandate and notably declined to serve in General Abacha’s military regime.

Furthermore, He was a mentor to a lot of people including the chairman of Flow FM Araba Femi Sanni who described him as a gentleman, a man of integrity, and highly principled as he left an impactful legacy while also sending his condolences to his family, Nigeria and the good people of Kwara state.
