Ex- Aviation Minister Fani-Kayode Praises Port Harcourt Refinery Revival, Cautions Against Monopolies
Former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has praised the revival of the Port Harcourt Refinery, stating that its restoration will help reduce monopolies in the sale of refined petroleum products in Nigeria.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for the successful resuscitation of the refinery, which resumed operations this week after years of dormancy. Fani-Kayode also lauded the efforts of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), for his determination and leadership in bringing the refinery back to life.
Fani-Kayode expressed concerns over attempts by certain individuals in the private sector to undermine the progress made in the oil sector, particularly those seeking to monopolize the refined petroleum market. He emphasized that while the oil industry may differ from other sectors like food or cement, it is essential to avoid efforts to control the market and create monopolies. He also reiterated that the success of the Port Harcourt Refinery is a significant achievement for Nigeria, one that should be celebrated rather than undermined.
The former minister expressed optimism about the future, hoping that as other refineries in the country are restored, Nigerians will benefit from a more robust and self-sufficient petroleum sector. He highlighted the importance of allowing the NNPC’s refineries to thrive alongside new private-sector ventures, with the ultimate goal being the strengthening of Nigeria’s local oil industry.
Fani-Kayode’s praise for Kyari’s leadership also reflected his broader support for President Tinubu’s administration, particularly in its efforts to revitalize key sectors of the economy. He emphasized that true supporters of Nigeria’s progress should recognize and celebrate the achievements of the NNPC and its leadership, seeing the revival of the refinery as a symbol of renewed hope for the country.
