Emir of Ilorin Advocates Support for Persons with Disabilities, Calls for Rights Commission
The Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has called on Nigerians, particularly residents of Kwara State, to show greater compassion and support for persons with disabilities. The Emir emphasized that assisting the less privileged is a key Islamic injunction and a moral responsibility for all.
The appeal was made during an advocacy visit to the Emir’s palace by the Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI), a group championing the rights of people with disabilities. Represented by the Balogun Alanamu of Ilorin, Dr. Usman Atolagbe Abubakar Jos, the Emir suggested the establishment of a state rights commission to address the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
He also commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his inclusive policies and commitment to the welfare of vulnerable groups, which have earned him multiple accolades. The governor was praised for providing meaningful employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, thereby helping them live with dignity and purpose.
Barrister Edeh Catherine Chinyere, the Executive Director of VDI, recounted her journey of becoming disabled at a young age and how it fueled her fight against gender-based violence, particularly affecting women and children with disabilities. She lauded Governor AbdulRazaq’s efforts in promoting inclusive governance by involving persons with disabilities in key decision-making processes.
Edeh, however, urged the governor to sign the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Bill into law and establish a dedicated rights commission to further improve their welfare.
Dr. O. K. Ogungbade, the Kwara State Focal Person for VDI, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for greater awareness around gender-based violence and the creation of a rights commission. He commended the governor for making Kwara a “disability-friendly” state but called for more action to institutionalize these efforts through legal and administrative frameworks.
The advocacy visit underscored the importance of inclusive policies and the need for sustained efforts to ensure the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in Kwara State and beyond.
