Davido States It’s Impossible to Discuss Afrobeats Without His Contribution
Nigerian singer Davido, also known as David Adeleke, has emphasized his crucial role in the rise of the afrobeat genre, declaring that it’s impossible to talk about afro beats without mentioning his name.
In a recent interview with newsmen the ‘Skelewu’ crooner confidently asserted his place in the genre, underscoring his contributions to its global popularity.
While widely regarded as one of the top three Afrobeats artists, alongside Wizkid and Burna Boy, Davido has previously expressed discomfort with being strictly labeled as part of the Afrobeats genre as he has spoken out about the tendency to group all African artists into one genre, regardless of their unique musical styles
Despite this, Davido clarified that he doesn’t take offense to the label of Afro beats, acknowledging its significance in elevating African music to a global stage. He emphasized the importance of having a genre to represent African music and explained that he doesn’t mind the Afrobeats classification, even though he personally prefers to call his music “Afrofusion.”
Davido further noted that he doesn’t obsess over having the term “Afrofusion” attached to his music, as he is aware of the long journey African music has had to reach mainstream recognition. For him, it’s more important to contribute to the evolution of African music than to focus on how it is categorized.
