Corps Liaison Officer Accused of Assaulting Two Female NYSC Members in Enugu
A Corps Liaison Officer (CLO) in Enugu East LGA, Enugu State, has been accused of assaulting two female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during a meeting on Saturday, December 7th, 2024
The Corps Liaison Officer allegedly intimidated the victims and later boasted of his “untouchable” status, claiming that his connections with NYSC officials made him immune to any consequences. The incident came to light when a relative of one of the victims shared the details on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the police were reportedly pressured to drop the case after law enforcement officers were involved.
In response to the allegations, the African Women in Public Service (AWiPS) condemned the assault, expressing outrage over the abuse of power and the subsequent cover-up as the organization issued a statement calling for immediate and transparent action, including a thorough investigation, to ensure justice for the victims. The organization emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, stating that they were violations of the victims’ rights and dignity, and demanded urgent redress.
The statement from AWiPS also highlighted concerns that law enforcement officers had been pressured to abandon the case, leaving the victims vulnerable to further threats and intimidation. The organization called for a transparent investigation into the matter and urged the NYSC to take all necessary actions to ensure that justice is served quickly.
AWiPS reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the safety and dignity of women and girls in public service. The organization pledged to closely monitor the case, stressing that the incident serves as a wake-up call for systemic change within the NYSC program.
