COP29: Nigeria Aims for Net-Zero Emissions by 2060, President Tinubu Announces
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced Nigeria’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 and enhancing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to combat climate change.
Speaking at the 29th session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29-UNFCCC) in Azerbaijan, President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Environment and Ecological Management, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, emphasized that Nigeria is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
He highlighted the increasing challenges the country faces, which hinder its sustainable development goals and aspirations. In response, Nigeria is intensifying efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve resilience, and integrate climate change solutions into national planning.
President Tinubu further outlined that Nigeria has developed a framework to implement its Nationally Determined Contribution and is actively pursuing adaptation measures through policies, programs, and project pipelines to build resilience.
The country is investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation, transportation, and other climate-friendly initiatives to address the adverse effects of climate change. President Tinubu further outlined that Nigeria has developed a framework to implement its NDC and is actively pursuing adaptation measures through policies, programs, and project pipelines to build resilience. The National Adaptation Plan (NAP) is also being finalized to ensure the country’s development priorities align with climate resilience.
The president stressed Nigeria’s commitment to its Energy Transition Plan and Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy, which aim to increase the share of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency. He called for international collaboration and partnerships to expand the country’s renewable energy mix. Additionally, Nigeria has developed a framework for participating in the Article 6 Carbon Market, with an Intergovernmental Committee overseeing its implementation. A national carbon registry is also being developed to track the country’s carbon market activities and ensure the efficient activation of the market.
