China Launches Rival to World Court with New Mediation Body in Hong Kong

China has formally established the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed) in Hong Kong, aiming to position it as a global hub for resolving international disputes and a potential rival to the International Court of Justice. The signing ceremony, attended by officials from several countries and international bodies, marks Beijing’s effort to enhance Hong Kong’s global legal stature amid ongoing economic challenges and geopolitical scrutiny. The IOMed headquarters, set to open by late 2025 or early 2026 in Wan Chai, will handle a range of disputes involving states, foreign nationals, and international entities.
