California Sues Federal Government Over Trump’s Tariff Policies, Citing Economic Harm

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General announced a lawsuit against the federal government on Wednesday, challenging former President Donald Trump’s use of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Newsom described the tariffs as a “self-destructive” move that has rattled global markets, hurt American businesses, and could cost California billions in lost revenue. The state, which accounts for 14% of U.S. GDP, argues Trump’s tariff actions exceeded his authority and have shifted the U.S. economy from free to crony capitalism.
