CAF Awards 2024: Peseiro Hails Lookman’s Men’s Player of the Year Triumph

December 17, 2024

Former Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has praised Ademola Lookman for winning the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award at the 2024 CAF Awards held on Monday night in Marrakech, Morocco.

The 27-year-old winger succeeds fellow Nigerian Victor Osimhen, marking the second consecutive year a Nigerian has claimed the prestigious title.

Lookman’s outstanding performances throughout the year earned him the award. He was pivotal in Nigeria’s journey to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, scoring three goals in the tournament.

At club level, the former Fulham star delivered a historic performance, netting a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final to secure Atalanta’s first-ever European title, only their second major trophy in the club’s 117-year history.

The Nigerian forward enjoyed an impressive 2023-24 season, tallying 17 goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta. He has continued his fine form this campaign, scoring 11 goals in 19 matches, as Atalanta currently sit two points clear of Napoli at the top of Serie A.

Celebrating Lookman’s achievement, Peseiro took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to commend the player’s efforts and the collective contribution of the Super Eagles.

“Congratulations @molalookman on winning the CAF Player of the Year 2024 award! A well-deserved recognition of your incredible talent and your significance to Nigeria and African football,” Peseiro wrote.

He also acknowledged the role of Lookman’s national teammates in supporting his success.

“It is also important to highlight the role of the Nigerian national team, whose collective efforts contributed to this individual award, as well as the remarkable achievement of a Super Eagle winning the award for the second consecutive year, following @victorosimhen9 victory last year. Many congratulations!”

Lookman’s triumph at the CAF Awards further cements Nigeria’s dominance in African football, with fans and analysts lauding the player’s consistency, hard work, and significant impact for both club and country.
