British Veteran Actor Timothy West Passes Away at 90
Actor Timothy West, one of Britain’s most celebrated and versatile performers, has passed away at the age of 90, his family has confirmed.
Known for his wide-ranging career in both television and theatre, West gained fame for his roles in TV sitcoms *Not Going Out* and *Bedtime*, as well as dramatic works like *Bleak House* and *Gentleman Jack*.
He also made memorable appearances in iconic British soaps such as *Coronation Street* and *EastEnders*. His family announced that he died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by loved ones.
The family also expressed their gratitude to the NHS staff at St George’s Hospital in Tooting and Avery Wandsworth for their care during his final days.
West was married to *Fawlty Towers* star Prunella Scales for 61 years, and the couple’s enduring partnership was a source of admiration. In recent years, they appeared together on Channel 4’s *Great Canal Journeys*, a travel documentary series that ran for 10 seasons. West’s children—Juliet, Samuel, and Joseph—shared that their father had led “a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage,” and was a deeply beloved figure in their family. He is survived by his wife, children, and a large extended family, including seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world. Broadcaster Piers Morgan recalled his interview with West for *Life Stories*, highlighting the actor’s profound devotion to his wife, especially as she battled Alzheimer’s. BBC Radio 4’s David Aaronovitch praised West as “a blessing in real life,” while former *EastEnders* actress Tracy-Ann Oberman described him as “the most wonderful actor and human being.” West’s impact on the arts and his contributions to British television have left a lasting legacy.
