Brazil’s Former President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Coup Plot Charges

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been charged by prosecutors over an alleged coup plot to poison his successor, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and assassinate a Supreme Court judge in a bid to remain in power after his 2022 election defeat.
Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet stated that Bolsonaro and 33 others orchestrated the plan, which was part of a broader scheme to undermine democracy, incite riots, and pressure military leaders to support his continued rule.
Dubbed the “Green and Yellow Dagger,” the plan allegedly received Bolsonaro’s approval, though he denies any wrongdoing. Following his loss, Bolsonaro left for the U.S. without conceding, and his supporters stormed government buildings in January 2023, leading to 1,500 arrests.
Currently banned from running for office for eight years, he faces charges alongside other defendants for allegedly attacking Brazil’s democratic foundations. The Supreme Court will review the case, and if the charges are accepted, Bolsonaro will stand trial.
