Bill for College of Education in Kwara Scales Second Reading
A bill proposing the establishment of the Federal College of Education in Afon, Kwara State, has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives. The legislation seeks to amend the Federal College of Education Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, to address gaps in teacher training and educational development in the region.
The bill, sponsored by Mr. Tolani Shagaya, who represents Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency, Kwara State, was first introduced on July 25, 2023. During the plenary session on Wednesday, Shagaya argued that the establishment of the college is essential to improving access to quality education and addressing the shortage of qualified teachers in underserved areas.
In his presentation, Shagaya noted that Kwara State is one of the few states without a federal institution dedicated to teacher training, despite its strategic location and rich cultural heritage. He emphasized that the proposed college would bridge this gap by providing equitable access to education and producing professionally trained teachers, particularly for rural communities.
The lawmaker highlighted the broader benefits of the institution, including its potential to stimulate socio-economic growth in Afon and its environs through job creation, infrastructure development, and community engagement. He also noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) by promoting inclusive growth and enhancing human capital development.
Shagaya expressed confidence in the readiness of the Afon community to host the institution, citing their demonstrated commitment to supporting the project. He described the establishment of the college as a transformative investment in the nation’s future, capable of improving teacher quality and addressing educational inequalities.
The bill’s progress in the legislative process has been welcomed by stakeholders, who see it as a critical step toward enhancing educational opportunities and driving development in Kwara State and beyond
