Bandit Leader Bello Turji Threatens Violence Over Arrest of Ally, Bako Wurgi
Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has issued threats of violence following the arrest of his close associate, Bako Wurgi, a key figure in his criminal network.
Wurgi, who plays a significant role in ransom negotiations and the collection of payments for hostages, was apprehended recently by troops of the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army. He is also a known arms dealer and is suspected of orchestrating the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, revealed that Turji’s anger over Wurgi’s arrest has prompted him to issue a series of threats. Turji has reportedly contacted influential figures, including village heads and chiefs in the Shinkafi area, warning of imminent attacks on their communities unless his ally is released.
“Turji has threatened to unleash attacks to pressure the authorities into freeing Wurgi,” Makama stated. “He has also vowed to spend any amount of money or livestock necessary to secure his release.”
The publication highlights Turji’s control over a significant number of people and livestock in the region, resources he has declared he is willing to leverage to force authorities into compliance.
The arrest of Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, marks a major success for security forces battling insurgency and banditry in Nigeria’s northwest. However, Turji’s threats have raised fresh concerns about possible retaliatory attacks on vulnerable communities.
The situation underscores the persistent security challenges in the region, with stakeholders calling for increased vigilance and proactive measures to counter the influence of bandit leaders like Turji.
