Australia Raises Concerns Over Sudden Chinese Naval Drills

February 21, 2025

Australia has expressed concerns to China over the lack of advance notice for a live-fire naval exercise conducted in international waters between Australia and New Zealand. The sudden announcement forced airlines such as Qantas and Air New Zealand to divert their flights for safety reasons. The Chinese navy’s task group, which included a frigate, a cruiser, and a replenishment vessel, was closely monitored by Australian and New Zealand naval and air forces as it moved along Australia’s east coast.

China has defended its actions, stating that the naval exercises were carried out per international law. However, Australian officials found the short notice disruptive, particularly given the potential risks posed to commercial aviation. Authorities have raised questions about the timing and necessity of the drills, emphasizing the need for better coordination to avoid unexpected disruptions in the future.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong is set to address the issue directly with her Chinese counterpart at the G20 meeting. The Australian government seeks further clarification on why more notice was not given and whether similar exercises are planned in the region. The sudden nature of the drill has underscored broader concerns about military activity in the Indo-Pacific and the importance of transparent communication between nations.

Meanwhile, New Zealand continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety of its people, vessels, and aircraft. The New Zealand frigate Te Kaha was in the vicinity of the Chinese naval exercise, gathering intelligence on the activity. Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing danger, but they remain vigilant as they assess the implications of the Chinese military’s maneuvers in the region.
