Atiku Criticizes APC’s Attack on Peter Obi, Demands Respect for Democracy
Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has sharply criticized the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and its Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, for what he sees as provocative comments aimed at Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate.
Atiku described Morka’s remarks as a troubling indication of the current administration’s efforts to suppress opposing voices. He expressed concern that these inflammatory statements were part of a broader strategy to stifle democratic debate and diminish the role of opposition leaders in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, Atiku specifically condemned Morka’s language, particularly the suggestion that Obi had “crossed the line,” which he believes undermines the core principles of democracy as he pointed out that such aggressive rhetoric has no place in a society that should be centered on civil discourse and mutual respect.
Furthermore, he warned that these kinds of remarks signal a dangerous shift towards authoritarianism, where opposing views are increasingly being marginalized or criminalized as he also urged Nigerians and the international community to stand up for the protection of free speech and the rights of opposition figures, warning that the survival of Nigeria’s democracy depends on safeguarding these fundamental freedoms
