Anambra Government Warns Against Tyre Burning, Threatens Prosecution
The Anambra State Government has issued a stern warning to residents to cease the harmful practice of burning tyres on roads, emphasizing that violators will face arrest and prosecution.
The caution was delivered in a press statement signed by Felix Odimegwu, the Commissioner for Environment, and Ifeanyi Okoma, the Commissioner for Works and Housing, on Friday December 27th as The government pointed out the destructive impact this practice has on the state’s infrastructure, particularly road conditions.
The release also pointed out the environmental hazards caused by burning tyres. This practice releases toxic pollutants, including sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter into the atmosphere, posing serious risks to plants, animals, and aquatic life.
In addition, the heat generated from burning tyres damages the tar used in road construction, accelerating the decay of roads and making the task of repair even more costly as the g overnment aims to protect both the environment and the state’s infrastructure from further harm.The Anambra State Government has called on all residents to stop burning tyres and other materials on roads, urging that this practice no longer be tolerated. Enforcement agencies under the Ministry of Environment will be tasked with ensuring compliance, with firm actions promised against anyone caught engaging in such activities.
