AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Gernot Rohr Appeals to Super Eagles for Help in Benin’s Quest
Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has called on Nigeria’s Super Eagles to assist his team’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Squirrels were held to a 1-1 draw by the Super Eagles in Abidjan during their penultimate qualifying fixture on Thursday. Benin took an early lead through Mohamed Tijani in the 16th minute, but Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen equalized in the 81st minute to share the spoils.
The result leaves Benin’s qualification hopes hanging in the balance. They now face a must-win match against Libya in Benghazi. However, their fate depends on Nigeria defeating Rwanda on Monday in their final group game in Uyo.
“We have to avoid defeat. But you don’t go to play for a draw,” Rohr stated, expressing confidence in his team’s performance against Nigeria. “Hopefully, the Super Eagles will beat Rwanda in Uyo.”
In a related development, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has been hit by a personal tragedy following the death of his father.
The Chippa United shot-stopper announced the news on his Instagram story on Friday morning but did not disclose the cause of death. Accompanied by a tearful emoji, Nwabali shared a heartfelt message: “Rest in peace, Dad.”
Nwabali played a key role in Nigeria’s draw against Benin Republic on Thursday night. However, it remains unclear whether he will be available for the team’s next AFCON qualifying match against Rwanda in Uyo as he may choose to mourn his loss.
Group C Qualification Outlook
The Super Eagles have already secured their spot at the 2025 AFCON, but the final round of games will determine whether Benin Republic joins them. A Nigerian victory over Rwanda, coupled with a positive result for Benin against Libya, will see Rohr’s side book their ticket to the tournament.
The final matchday promises high stakes and emotional undertones as the teams vie for a place in Africa’s premier football competition.
