2025 Budget: State House Reportedly Budgets N15bn for SUVs, Tyres, and Office Complex

December 19, 2024

The State House has allocated N15.09 billion for the purchase of tyres for bulletproof vehicles, SUVs, operational vehicles, plain cars, and the construction of a new office complex for Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, according to details from the 2025 Appropriation Bill released by the Budget Office of the Federation on Thursday.

This is part of the ambitious N49.7 trillion national budget presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly on Wednesday. Titled the “Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity,” the proposal prioritizes defence, infrastructure, and human capital development while projecting a N13.39 trillion deficit to be financed through borrowing.

The State House budget includes N164 million for tyres for various vehicles, N1.1 billion for replacing SUVs, and N3.66 billion for operational vehicles. SUVs for the President and Vice President will cost N127.86 million, while the Chief of Staff’s office will spend N285 million on motor vehicles. The Chief Security Officer to the President has an allocation of N179.63 million for security and operational vehicles.

Additionally, N1.83 billion has been earmarked for the construction of an office complex for Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, while N2.12 billion is set aside for honorariums and sitting allowances.

The proposed 2025 budget also allocates N5.49 billion for the annual maintenance of the Presidential Villa.

Key priorities in the national budget include N4.91 trillion for defence and security and N4.06 trillion for infrastructure projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Highway. Education and health sectors will receive N3.52 trillion and N2.48 trillion, respectively, aimed at improving universal education and healthcare delivery.

President Tinubu underscored his administration’s focus on strengthening security, enhancing infrastructure, and fostering economic growth. The budget is based on assumptions of declining inflation from 34.6% to 15% and an improved naira exchange rate of N1,500 per dollar.

The State House expenditure has drawn criticism from some quarters over perceived extravagance amid the country’s economic challenges. Lawmakers are set to deliberate on the proposed budget in the coming weeks.
