13 Miners Massacred in Peru as Government Halts Gold Mining in Pataz

Peru’s President Dina Boluarte has suspended gold mining and imposed a 12-hour curfew in Pataz, La Libertad, after 13 contract workers were kidnapped and murdered by suspected criminal gangs linked to illegal mining. The victims were found tortured and shot in a tunnel operated by La Poderosa Mining Company. Despite a long-standing state of emergency and police presence, violence in the region has surged, with 39 artisanal miners killed so far. The army will now take control of the area amid mounting criticism of the government’s slow response.
